Painters’ Painters at the Saatchi Gallery (London, SW3 4RY) is a fascinating exhibition presenting nine artists with strong painting heritage. All have been strongly influenced by earlier masters, from Cézanne, Munch and Hopper to more recent artists such as de Kooning – and deciphering these influences is a big part of the pleasure of this exhibition.
Saatchi’s mission is to find and promote new talent, and this exhibition of upcoming artists is in some respects his seal of approval, and well-deserved. It is also proof if needed that painting still occupies an important place in contemporary fine art.
